Fuerteventura is a year-round surf destination, but the Atlantic here is not as warm as the Caribbean. So how cold is the water, and what should you wear for a surf lesson? Here is a simple guide.

Water temperature through the year
The sea around Fuerteventura stays fairly stable thanks to the island’s mild climate. As a rough guide:
- Winter (December – February): around 18–20°C
- Spring (March – May): around 18–19°C – usually the coolest water of the year
- Summer (June – August): around 20–22°C
- Autumn (September – November): around 22–23°C – usually the warmest water of the year
Water temperature varies a little from day to day with wind and swell, but it rarely feels freezing once you are moving.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Yes – and it is included in every lesson. Even in warm months, a wetsuit keeps you comfortable during a 3–4 hour session, protects against the sun and the board, and adds a bit of buoyancy. We give you a wetsuit suited to the season and your size.
What to wear under the wetsuit
Most people simply wear a swimsuit or bikini. Avoid anything with zips or buckles that can rub. Bring a towel and something warm to put on afterwards – the wind in the north of the island can feel cool after a session, especially in winter.
What else to bring
- Water – surfing is a workout, and the sun is strong all year
- Sunscreen for your face, ideally water resistant
- A hat and sunglasses for the beach
- A warm top or hoodie for after the lesson
