One of the questions we hear most often is: when is the best time to come to Fuerteventura to surf? The short answer is that there is no bad time. The island gets waves all year round, the water never gets truly cold and the sun is almost always out. But the ocean does change with the seasons, and knowing how it changes will help you pick the right time for your level.

Autumn (September – November): the sweet spot

For many surfers, autumn is the best time of the year in Fuerteventura. The first swells of the season arrive from the North Atlantic, the summer wind calms down and the water is at its warmest – around 22–23°C in September and October. Beginners still find plenty of small, friendly waves on the beach breaks, while more experienced surfers start to enjoy the reefs around Corralejo and Majanicho.

Winter (December – February): more power, more choice

Winter brings the biggest and most consistent swells. This is when the north shore of the island really comes alive and the famous reef breaks work at their best. Water temperature drops to around 19°C, so a 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit is a good idea. Days are still sunny and mild (usually 20°C or more), which is why so many people escape the European winter here.

If you are a complete beginner, winter is still a great time to learn – you just need someone who knows where to go. On bigger days we look for sheltered spots with smaller, safer waves. That is exactly why we choose the spot every day according to the forecast and your level.

Spring (March – May): calmer and quieter

Spring is a relaxed, less crowded season. Swells are still coming in, but they are usually a bit smaller than in winter, and the water is at its coolest (around 18–19°C). It is a very good time for beginners and improvers who want steady waves and fewer people in the water.

Summer (June – August): small waves, strong wind

In summer the swells get smaller and the trade winds blow more strongly – which is why Fuerteventura is also famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Small, gentle waves make summer a perfect time for first-timers, kids and families. The water warms up to 21–22°C, so many people are happy in a thin wetsuit.
